The Jon Wilson Memorial Yurt is open and it is great!  See the pictures coming
soon to the Photo Album.  The yurt is 16 feet in diameter and sleeps up to 6.
We built the deck large enough for a 20 foot diameter yurt and hope to build a
new 20 foot  yurt which will sleep up to 8 by next year.

Only a mile and a quarter from the Highway; you can drive from the Front
Range, Sante Fe, Durango or farther to arrive well after noon at the trailhead
and still have plenty of time to make it to the yurt.  We know of a couple
groups already who have run back down to town for extra supplies (b double e
double r  un).    There is steep skiing right off the front deck and a thousand
feet of vertical on 30 degree to 45 degree open slope (the Sawmill Headwall)
behind the yurt just above Sawmill Park.   There is cell coverage at the yurt.
We know that this will be accompanied by a chorus of groans but for young
families and novice backcountry skiers (not to mention the logically cautious),
it is added security.

The
Fawn Lakes Yurt will not be ready this year.  The volunteers were unable
to re-establish the Fawn Lakes Yurt this year.  Currently we plan to build a 20
foot yurt ( max occupancy 8 ) for the Jon Wilson /  Samill site next year and to
move the 16 foot yurt to Fawn Lakes in 08.

Construction will begin soon on the new deck for the
Colorado Trail Friends
Yurt
at the new location.   Rio Grande National Forest Service is allowing
Hinsdale Haute Route to re-establish the Colorado Trail Friends Yurt on a new
deck to be constructed approximately one quarter of a mile to the NE of the
current location, which will improve the views and the solar.  In addition, since
the deck will be built on a hillside there will be room underneath the deck where
we will be allowed to store the yurt.

Our Special Use Permits with Forest Service and BLM currently call for the
yurts to be hauled to their sites, set them up and furnish them after there is
enough snow to do so, on the snow, and to remove it all before the snow melts;
so that in essence, we do not touch the ground, except for the decks which they
do allow us to leave in place.  Leaving the Colorado Trail yurt onsite will be a
great improvement.

Because of the portability issue the yurts have used clear vinyl for the
windows on our unique yurt designs.  We have ordered 4 foot by 4 foot
Thermo Pane opening windows for the Colorado Trail Yurt, to be installed by
early March.
